Developing for mobile is a weird thing. I learned that most of the time, mobile games are actually a combination of entertainment and “service” to the players.
Example, a player can expect to spend hours grinding and leveling up a character in a JRPG on a console. On the mobile device however, there must be some sort of a “service” for him to level up his characters, even when he is not playing the game. (Hmmm, maybe that’s why idle games are so popular.) Mobile game developers have to try so much harder to please and tease the players!
The initial design of Commando Blaze was actually an endless running game, so that the lifespan of the game can be increased.
But I eventually decided that if I want to make a game for retro game lovers, this game needs an ending. And it will be a “classic” ending that will bring a smile to the players’ face when they complete the game.
Of course, I added “cheat code” in case some players have trouble completing the game. Just like the 30 lives cheat code.
